Episode 28: Practicing Gratitude in Your Darkest Moments

Life is not alwats perfect, am I right? When times are tough do you feel grateful? Do you feel like practicing gratitude? Probably not.

What is gratitude? Gratitude is the conscious effort to recognize the good we do have in our lives.

When you are experiencing difficult moments or seasons in your life, it is easy to let them get the best of you. To wallow, to let the never ending negative thoughts creep in and tell us that life is hard and we aren’t good enough for better, or things will never get better so just accept it.

Trust me, everyone experiences this to some degree! You are not alone.

But how do you get through it? How do you focus your energy and thoughts on the positive? By starting small. By showing gratitude and being thankful for the smallest things to start. In Jessica’s case, having $5 for a cup of coffee, money for groceries, enough gas to get her where she needed to go.

Practicing gratitude should not be complex and time consuming. It should not stress you out trying to figure out what to thankful for. As you go about your day, say thank you for anything that lights you up or makes your day a little easier. Eventually you will naturally notice your gratitude practice becoming effortless. But don’t stop there, take it to the next level. Begin to journal, create a nightly routine where you right down all that you are grateful for in your life and mediate on the joy they bring you.

People who practice gratitude are more well rested, grounded, mentally and emotionally balanced, they experience positive emotions and are more optimistic, and the list goes on. What also happens is a change in what you attract into your life. Positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative. The more gratitude you practice, the most positive you become and the higher your vibration will be which will only attract like minded people, circumstances and things into your life.

Jessica Marola-Hugh is my guest today and she is a true example of perseverance through some tough moments in life. She experienced many difficulties in her marriage; learning of her husbands struggle with addiction after marriage, having to navigate the feelings she developed because of it while caring for her young children, overcoming the aftermath of unfaithfulness in her marriage, and to top it all – a traumatic near death accident her husband experienced, forever changing their lives.

This would leave many struggling to move forward – to keep putting one foot ahead of the other, never mind being able to come through it in better shape and having developed a gratitude practice.

But not for Jessica. She chose love, compassion, kindness and forgiveness. Jessica put in the work to save her marriage. She became gratitude in even the smallest things. This was not an easy feat, it took effort, consistency, patience, grace, and commitment. But she did it, and that means so can you!

Today’s episode goes deep into her Jessica’s experiences and how she has pulled through. I cannot wait for you to hear from a real life inspiration story. So get comfy, grab yourself a cup of organic tea and maybe a tissue box if you are like me and are a little sensitive and let’s get to it!
