Episode 27: The Benefits of Sproos Collagen

Did you know that your body’s natural collagen production peaks around age 25 and slowly declines each passing year, by about 1.5% per year, to be exact?

Collagen doesn’t only impact your hair and skin, it improves overall health; gut , joints, bones, blood cells and so much more. In fact, it is the second most common substance in the body, following water.

What can we do to replace the lost collagen we start to experience? Well, you can start taking a collagen supplement! I was on the search earlier this year and went to a few different health food stores and searched online, but was so confused and lost as to which brand or form I should take. How do you choose a good quality collagen?

I am joined by lovely Leah Garrad-Cole, Co-Founder of Sproos, which provides quality collagen products. The inspiration behind the creation of Sproos started through her own health journey. She was at the time in the process of selling Love Child Organics and was stressed, overworked and struggling to prioritize her needs for self-care. She developed serious allergic reactions that would occur out of no where every month.

Working with a Naturopathic Doctor, one of the changes she implemented was taking collagen and found it make such a different in her gut and overall health. It was exactly what her and her husband were looking for for their next business.

When choosing a collagen, Leah recommends selecting a company in line with your values. Sproos sources collagen only from grass fed and grass finished cows in the U.S. and not from Brazil as cattle ranching is the largest driver of deforestation of the rain forest. Canada was not an option as there aren’t enough options available.

When choosing a marine collagen, select one that is from wild caught salmon and not one that indicates “sustainable” as this means they are farmed fish from Asia. Sproos sources prefers to source local and has a direct relationship with the producer in Nova Scotia.

As for the bio availability, you will want to ensure it has a molecular weight of 5000 Daltons, but ideally 3000 which means that your body will be better able to absorb it but also it will dissolve easier and will be more flavorless. No one wants that fishy taste, am I right?!

Mix Sproos collagen powder with anything; smoothies, hot water, tea, coffee, baked good, the list is endless. But Leah loves making an elixir type beverage consisting of: Sproos collagen, cacao powder, cashews, MCT powder and honey! The perfect hot chocolate-y beverage!

In addition to chatting collagen, we dive in deeper into Leah’s entrepreneurial journey, how she makes time to care for herself given her very busy schedule, but also her advice for those looking to or are already working alongside their spouse.

So get comfy and grab yourself a cup of organic tea with some Sproos collagen mixed in and learn from the successful woman behind 2 of my favorite brands!
