The Newest Trend in Wedding Cakes

I am so excited to finally share with you my very first Spotlight Feature!

As I mentioned in my first blog post (click here), one of the focuses for REVUE BLANC was to introduce you to the most amazing Eventistes! I feel that knowing who you are working with is very important as they will play an important part on and leading up to your special day! Through my Spotlight Features, you will get to know our recommended Eventistes both professionally and personally! I hope it helps make your vendor selections a bit easier, as it can be hard to filter through all the amazing companies out there and narrow down which you feel are the best fit for you!

So let’s get to it!

Recently, I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with the lovely sisters of SHOP Tineke; Jenny De Jong and Rebecca Sehn! They are both individually experienced in this industry and have joined together to bring you something truly creative and unique to help personalize your special day!

RB: How do you pronounce Tineke?

J: It’s pronounced TEE-nah-kuh. Its origin is Dutch. It is our grandma’s name.

RB: What is Shop Tineke?

R: We are an online boutique that creates custom cake toppers for weddings and special events.

RB: What inspired you to create Shop Tineke?

J: We had seen a lot of these toppers on Instagram, mainly from Australia, but there wasn’t really anything of the same calibre available in Vancouver. We thought they were quite unique so we wanted to bring them here to Vancouver.  Since launching, we have started shipping worldwide; recently just shipping one to Nunavut – which was pretty cool! We have shipped basically all over the state, to Europe and Australia as well.

R: It’s neat to see them being ordered from all over the world!

RB: Was it expected, or were you completely surprised that it was going to go that far?

J: I think we were expecting more of an across Canada and local market – more so Vancouver and Toronto, so to see it go across North America and worldwide was really exciting!

RB: Have you always had a love for creating and design?

J & R: YES! Definitely.

J: With Rebecca being a photographer and myself being an event planner, we have always been in this industry and we are always seeing and working with beautiful things, so this was the right fit for us.

RB: What do you love most about what you do?

R: Definitely the creative process. Being able to do different designs and work with our clients to bring their visions to life is fun.

J: We love being a part of their most important and special events, as well.

RB: Can you share any funny/interesting experiences you’ve had with your business? Any bumps in the road?

R: No bumps so far, but the most exciting experience was Jillian Harris’ baby shower.

J: Jillian had a baby recently, and we custom designed lots of details for Leo’s first party. We created a cake topper, cupcake toppers, pie toppers, cocktail sticks, and a beautiful banner for the dessert table. That was a lot of fun working on so many details. It was definitely one of our more exciting experiences as I had the opportunity to go to Kelowna for the party.

RB: What types of designs do you create? What can they be used for? (I.e. cake toppers, etc)

J: We can do all different kinds of designs. We have also recently created place cards. They are acrylic cut-outs of the Bride and Groom’s name which goes right on the charger plate at their place setting.  Essentially, anything that can be dreamed up, we can create.

R: Our focus right now is cake toppers, but it’s fun to be able to create other things as well!

J: Our designs can be for any kind of party or event – we have done baptisms, first communion, birthday parties, anniversaries, and weddings. Any event that is important that has a cake or desserts, we can create for.

RB: What designs/trends do you see most requested by your clients?

R: I think this year the most popular trend we have seen is the gold mirror material and a scripted font that mimics modern calligraphy.

RB: Are there certain designs/items you are dying to try?

R: We love the word and the script designs, but we’ve actually been exploring graphics lately and have recently been working on a floral line. It’s like a sketched floral created into an acrylic cake topper. So focusing a little away from the words, which we still love and will keep, but going towards playing with more graphics.

J: It’s very cool, because you can have a very simple cake, but you can add this floral graphic cake topper that will add elegance to it.

RB: Do you foresee any new trends coming up for 2018?

J: I think these more unique designs will be the trend for 2018. Whether it be roses, geometrics or different graphics. In addition, the custom toppers like someone’s name or monogram.

RB: What products do you use to create your designs?

R: We offer wood and acrylic materials. The acrylic material is available in a gold or silver mirror, as well as white and black. We also have a classic gold, which is wood with a gold paint applied.

RB: Are they offered in different colours than the ones you mentioned?

J: If a client has an idea, we are open to source it. We recently did a black sparkle finish, but the gold, silver, black, and white are the most popular so far.  But we are always open to trying new things and sourcing new materials.

RB: What exactly goes into designing and creating a piece?

R: It depends if it is a custom topper or one that we have designed on our own. With custom requests we work with a client to see exactly what kind of script or graphic they would like to work with. From there we design a proof and alter as needed based on our clients’ feedback.

RB: How long does it take to create a piece?

R: About 2 weeks, but if someone needs it faster we can do rush orders.

RB: Can you use different custom fonts or do you have fonts clients can select from?

R: We can use custom fonts; we can create absolutely anything as long as the font is available.

RB: Do you have any upcoming designs/products you will be launching?

R: We are working on the floral line for this year and next year.

RB: What is the price ranges for your services?

J: The toppers that we have pre-designed and sell in our Etsy store are $32. Our custom toppers start at $42.

Now that you know them a bit better professionally, let’s get to know them personally! It’s not typical to get a sister duo, so how could I not create a “Sister Tag” video clip! Watch the video clip below to see who knows who better!
