Episode 15: Self-Care isn’t Selfish

Many would agree that self-care isn’t selfish, but when you start on this journey to taking better care of yourself, there are aspects of self-care that definitely can feel selfish.

Seven years ago, I decided to put my life on hold and take on another job to help support my family. Three years in to working 2 jobs 5 days a week, I started to see that my health was taking a toll – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, I was pushing myself the limit. It wasn’t until about 2 or 3 years ago that it all came to head. Change needed to happen in my life. Boundaries needed to be put in place. I had to start saying no and being firm and respectful of what my needs were. I had to start putting myself first and practice self-care consistently!

This was not easy. I felt so much guilt. I was now taking a stand for myself and doing what I needed to heal and thus lost friends because they didn’t understand. I learned how to be okay with it. Speaking with a counsellor was one of the best decisions I made. Being able to speak with someone who was unbiased and help me see for myself what I needed to do was exactly what I needed.

In today’s episode, I share what exactly lead to my burnout. What I did to turn things around and focus on my self-care routine. How I set boundaries and learned to say no. Basically what I have learned over the last seven years that now has me in a better place than I could hope for even though my circumstances have not changed.

Sometimes changing the circumstance is not the key – it could be changing how you approach and handle it that makes the difference.

I hope that my journey and what I have learned helps you feel like you are not alone and that there is a way to heal and live a better life!
